How much exercise is the RIGHT amount of exercise for cancer patients?
Be the minority! Be the 5%
Did you know, 95% of people don’t meet the recommended exercise requirements for good health?
And that 95% of people don’t meet the recommended fibre intake?
As cancer patients and survivors, who want to lead healthy lives with as few side effects as possible, it’s extra important that we are in the 5%.
What does that actually mean? The official WHO guidelines say 150 minutes of cardio exercise per week plus 2 sessions of weight bearing exercise. But the reality is that may not be the right level for everyone, especially if you are in the middle of cancer treatment. So my recommendation is to try and move a little every day - at your level. And to progress that when you feel able.
25-30g fibre per day. If you’re not sure what that looks like, start by looking at the labels on foods. Or ask! I’m happy to help.

You will help prevent cancer recurrence. You will help yourself feel better. In so many ways. And you’ll also help prevent heart disease and type 2 diabetes, among MANY other things!
So, what can you do today to point the needle in the right direction?
Get out for a walk. 150 minutes sounds like a lot, but it’s just over 20 minutes a day. That’s easy!
And weight bearing exercise doesn’t need to be much. You can fit in 40 minutes per week of squats, lunges, planks and press ups, while waiting for the kettle to boil, while you brush your teeth, or while you’re sitting on hold, waiting for someone to answer the phone.
It’s just over 5 minutes a day!
And fibre. 3 pieces of fruit. Switch from white to brown pasta or bread. Add some raw nuts and seeds to your cereal. It really isn’t that hard. It just takes a little mind shift and a daily reminder to yourself.
But somehow, 95% of the population aren’t doing it.
Need help? That’s what I’m here for! Just ask, I’m happy to offer suggestions free of charge. And if you want further support, motivation, accountability - that’s my job 😀
